While Google beat Apple to the punch as it released the ability to type to Google Assistant back in May, the same functionality arrived for Siri with the iOS 11 beta. Follow along after the jump for how to turn this feature on.
From a new voice to a cool on-device learning feature, this Siri update could have a pretty big impact on how you use your iPhone or iPad. True, a lot of it is just your typical Apple hype, but additions like a new translate feature and the ability to type to Siri will be quite useful, so I'll give you a tour of the important changes below. You can also try the new Siri out yourself by installing iOS 11 right now.

Captions can help everyone, including users who are deaf or hard of hearing. The new Live Captions feature offers real-time, on-device-generated transcriptions of conversations, so you can follow along with auditory and visual media including Phone calls, FaceTime calls, and content from the web securely on your device.1 They can even capture and caption live, in-person speech. When using Live Captions on Mac, you have the option to use Type to Speak to type out your responses and have them read out loud in real time for others in the conversation.2 You can also customize the Live Captions window so that the size, placement, fonts, and colors suit your individual needs.3
Type to Siri - Not everyone wants to talk to Siri and now you can hack an Accessibility feature which allows you to type your question. Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> Siri -> Type to Siri. Next time you prompt Siri a keyboard will appear.
The only drawback of Type to Siri feature is that when it is enabled you will no longer be able to talk to Siri. The only method of input available to you would be to type. The limitation is there because Type to Siri is an accessibility feature, which is designed for those who cannot use their voice to communicate. However as Google Assistant has proved typing is a method that many users prefer especially when in company, because it is discreet.
While Siri is useful in a lot of cases, it makes the user stand out from the crowd when interacted with in a public place. Sure, you can go ahead and cup your hand around your iPhone or iPad's mic and make a quick query, but it doesn't quite help since Siri will have a hard time understand your whisper through all that ambient noise. So, what's the solution to this problem? You type your query to Siri instead. In iOS 11, you can do that, and enabling this feature is a walk in the park. Once enabled, up and running, you can launch Siri and the on-screen keyboard will pop right up. Now you can type away and Siri will throw a reply at you as it would using voice.
Although typing in tvOS is painful at best, tvOS 14.5 gains the Type to Siri feature that has been available in iOS for some time, which lets you type Siri requests instead of speaking them. Turn it on in Settings > Accessibility.
I have been waiting for this 11.3 update.Big Sur Questions: I am contemplating a move to Big Sur (Now running Mojave) since I have finally been able to move off some older non-64 bit apps. Now I know that the iTunes I am used to, the one I am running now, is completely different in Big Sur. I rip all my DVDs and I feed all of my Apple TVs through network sharing with iTunes. I have a hundred ripped movies and at least that many TV series. (Yes, I own all the DVDs) Will I still be able to do that in Big Sur? Can I still sync up my ipad/iphone? I know apps are gone. Thanks
